Rochlitzer porphyr
110cm × 70cm × 15cm plus base
Cemetery: Sophien II, Berlin
This gravestone was a very special project for me. The idea came from a photograph that the decedent’s daughter brought with her. It was a black-and-white photo, like those found in old family albums. It showed a mountain range in the former Sudetenland, which the deceased had fled as a child. The process began with selecting the right block of stone, for which I travelled to source it directly from the quarry. We needed a natural-looking crust that I wanted to leave almost untouched, which then would become the mountain range. It was not about a detailed 1:1 representation, but rather about suggestively depicting the mountains, like a distant memory.
