Untersberger marble
100cm × 53cm × 15cm
Dorotheenstädtischer Friedhof, cemetery in Berlin
The large relief on the front of this gravestone shows a section of the Doge's Palace in Venice. The viewer stands in the Doge's Palace and looks out towards the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. From the balcony, you can see the water surrounding Venice, the houses on the island and a landscape in the distance. The relief is reminiscent of the family's many trips to Venice, which brought the son, who loved the art and architecture of this city, back every year. The two partially visible sections of the tracery (windows) emphasise the fragmentary nature of the relief, like an incomplete memory, while the pink Untersberg marble alludes to Italian sculptures.
